My Forever Super Hero is a sensitive and humorous narrative about a boy and his family’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Based on the actual experiences of the author and other caregivers, the story is told from the perspective of an adolescent son, providing the reader with an understanding of the emotions and stress experienced by family members. The reader can also begin to see the difficulties experienced by the family in accepting and understanding the complications of this disease.

Following the story, the author provides an explanation of the range of emotions a person will likely experience, as well as skills to better manage those emotions. This book is a valuable resource for families (and any other individuals) struggling to understand Alzheimer’s disease and the impact it has on the family and loved ones.

About the Author:
Author Fatima Devine is a practicing psychotherapist. But the inspiration for the book is much more personal. Fatima’s husband, George was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2018 at the age of 65. They have been together since they were freshmen in college, and have been married for over 45 years.
Fatima, and Cynthia Laroche, the book's illustrator, are committed to having a positive impact on families who are facing the difficult journey involved in dealing with Alzheimer’s, raising awareness of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and providing information and tools to help people with coping with stress in general. These longtime friends and now literary collaborators believe in the healing power of humor, mindfulness, and creativity.

excellent resource

There has been very little written to help youngsters understand the changes that happen to family members when they are diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Many young people become frightened of, and for, the person they love. This book is an invaluable resource for families experiencing the changes that happen with this disease. It is down-to-earth, easy to understand, and full of answers to the questions children often have but cannot easily articulate. Kudos to the author for being able to convey hope to families in the midst of being a full-time caretaker.

Book of information and hope

This book is a must read for anyone whose loved one is experiencing memory issues and needs somewhere to turn. Written with understanding and warmth the author answers questions and alleviates fears. The book begins with a teenager's experience as his father (and hero) becomes more and more impacted by the disease. It validates all the feelings of loneliness, isolation and fear that are so prevalent and normal for those who love someone with Alzheimer's. The author offers advice and resources in a straightforward and easy to follow way. Most of all she offers hope to those who may feel overwhelmed.
