ADAPTIVE CLOTHING

Frequently Asked Questions

What is “adaptive clothing?”

Adaptive clothing is clothing designed with features that make getting dressed easier and more comfortable. That can include magnetic closures instead of traditional buttons, side zippers, elastic waistbands, four-way stretch and other design features that reduce some of the reaching, bending and fine-motor coordination involved in dressing.

At Joe & Bella, we work with experienced designers to create adaptive clothing for men and women that looks like familiar everyday apparel while incorporating features that make dressing easier.

What are some examples of adaptive clothing?

One example is a button-down shirt with hidden magnetic closures instead of traditional buttons.

Other examples include pants with side zippers that create a larger opening for dressing, CareZips® pants with additional access for personal care, elastic-waist pants, magnetic-zip clothing and gripper socks.

Different adaptive features address different dressing needs, so the right option depends on what part of getting dressed is difficult.

Who can benefit from adaptive clothing?

Adaptive clothing can be useful for anyone who finds traditional clothing difficult to put on, take off or manage.

Joe & Bella primarily designs for seniors and older adults, as well as people with disabilities, limited mobility or dexterity, and people recovering from an injury or surgery. Adaptive clothing can also make assisted dressing easier for family members and caregivers.

If you're shopping specifically for an older adult, explore our Adaptive Clothing for Seniors collection.

Why is adaptive clothing helpful for seniors and older adults?

Getting dressed can become more difficult when changes in mobility, dexterity, strength or balance make traditional clothing harder to manage.

Adaptive clothing for seniors can simplify parts of the dressing routine with features such as magnetic closures, accessible zippers, elastic waistbands and flexible construction.

The goal isn't to change someone's personal style. It's to make familiar, everyday clothing easier to wear while supporting as much independence as possible.

How does adaptive clothing make getting dressed easier?

Adaptive clothing changes the parts of traditional clothing that can create unnecessary difficulty.

For example, magnetic closures can eliminate the need to fasten a row of small buttons. Side-opening pants can create more room for lower-body dressing. Elastic waistbands can remove conventional waist closures, and four-way stretch can provide additional flexibility while putting clothing on and taking it off.

The most useful feature depends on the person's specific dressing challenge and whether they dress independently or with assistance.

Does adaptive clothing look different from regular clothing?

It doesn't have to.

Joe & Bella designs adaptive clothing so many of the functional features are discreet. A magnetic shirt can still look like a traditional button-down, and adaptive pants can retain the appearance of familiar everyday styles.

Our goal is clothing that delivers easier dressing without looking clinical or sacrificing personal style.

Can adaptive clothing help with assisted dressing?

Yes. Adaptive clothing can also be helpful when a caregiver, family member or other person assists with dressing.

Larger openings, simplified closures and accessible designs can reduce some of the reaching, pulling and complicated fastening involved in traditional clothing.

The best garment depends on how the person normally gets dressed and where assistance is needed.

How much does adaptive clothing cost?

The cost of adaptive clothing varies depending on the garment and the adaptive features involved.

Products with more specialized construction, closures or access features may cost more than conventional basics. You can browse Joe & Bella's current collections to compare styles, features and prices.

Is adaptive clothing covered by insurance or eligible for HSA/FSA funds?

Adaptive clothing is generally not covered by standard health insurance.

Joe & Bella offers the ability to purchase clothing using HSA or FSA funds. Visit our HSA/FSA page to learn more about eligibility and how the purchasing process works.

Who can wear adaptive clothing?

Anyone. While adaptive clothing is particularly helpful for older adults, people with disabilities, or anyone with limited mobility, these features make life easier for everyone. If you’re recovering from surgery, dealing with arthritis, or just want to get dressed faster in the morning, that's who adaptive apparel is for.

Is adaptive clothing only for seniors and people with disabilities?

No. While adaptive clothing can be especially useful for seniors, older adults and people with disabilities or limited mobility, the features can benefit anyone who wants to make getting dressed easier.

That can include someone recovering from surgery or an injury, dressing with one hand, dealing with temporary mobility restrictions, or simply preferring clothing with easier closures and more accessible design.
