Finding clothing that fits comfortably can be difficult when you have a larger body size. If conventional buttons, waist closures or lower-body dressing are also difficult, adaptive features may help simplify the dressing process.

Joe & Bella offers adaptive shirts, tops and pants in sizes up to XXL, depending on the style. Our clothing is not a dedicated bariatric or plus-size range, but some styles may work well for people whose measurements fall within our available sizing and who also benefit from easier-dressing features.

Always compare your measurements with the size chart for the individual garment before ordering.

What Is Bariatric Clothing?

Bariatric clothing generally refers to clothing made for people with larger body dimensions. Some bariatric garments are specifically designed for medical or care settings, while others simply provide additional sizing and room.

Joe & Bella does not make specialized bariatric medical garments.

Instead, we make everyday adaptive clothing with features that change how the garment opens, closes or is put on.

For someone who fits within our sizing, those features may be useful when conventional clothing is difficult to manage.

What to Look for in Adaptive Clothing for a Larger Body

Start with fit.

Adaptive features cannot make up for a garment that is too small or does not fit your proportions correctly.

Consider:

  • Your current chest, waist and hip measurements
  • Whether the garment fits comfortably while sitting and standing
  • Whether traditional buttons or zippers are difficult
  • Whether bending or stepping into pants is difficult
  • Whether you dress independently or with assistance
  • Whether your measurements are changing

Once you know a garment fits, choose the adaptive feature that addresses the part of dressing you want to make easier.

Magnetic Shirts

Traditional button-down shirts require each button to be aligned with a buttonhole and fastened individually.

Joe & Bella's magnetic clothing keeps the familiar look of a button-down while replacing the functional buttons with hidden magnetic closures.

That provides an alternative when small buttons are difficult to manage.

Important: Magnetic garments may not be appropriate for people with certain implanted medical devices. Follow the garment warning and guidance from the device manufacturer or healthcare provider.

HoodEase® Magnetic-Zip Hoodie

Starting a traditional zipper requires the two sides to be aligned before the zipper can move.

HoodEase® uses a magnetic zipper base that helps bring the two sides together before zipping.

This can simplify one of the more precise steps involved in putting on a traditional zip-up garment.

Adaptive Pants for Easier Dressing

Lower-body dressing may involve bending, stepping into pant legs, pulling the garment upward and managing the waistband.

Joe & Bella's adaptive pants offer different ways to put on and remove pants when conventional dressing is difficult.

Depending on the style, features include:

  • Four-way stretch
  • Soft fabrics
  • Flexible waist construction
  • Alternative side openings

These features are designed around easier dressing—not around treating or accommodating a particular body weight or medical condition.

Everyday Side-Zip Pants

Our Everyday Side-Zip Pants use full-length outer-seam zippers running from the waist to the hem.

The zippers open from both the top and bottom, allowing the pant legs to open along the sides instead of relying only on a conventional waist opening.

That can provide another way to put the pants on or take them off when stepping into traditional pants or pulling them upward is difficult.

CareZips® Adaptive Pants

CareZips® use three zippers:

  • Two outer-seam zippers from the waist to the knee
  • One inseam zipper running knee-to-knee through the crotch

This design opens the garment differently from traditional pants and can be useful when assisted lower-body dressing is needed.

CareZips® and Everyday Side-Zip Pants solve different dressing needs, so the better option depends on how the wearer gets dressed.

Extra Room Through the Pelvis

Joe & Bella adaptive pants are designed with extra room through the pelvis.

That construction was originally created to discreetly accommodate incontinence products, even when full.

It also gives the pants a more accommodating cut through the pelvis than a more traditionally fitted pant.

Fit still depends on the wearer's individual measurements, so use the product-specific size chart rather than assuming that extra room means a larger overall size.

Clothing in Sizes Up to XXL

Joe & Bella currently offers select adaptive styles in sizes up to XXL.

We do not currently offer a dedicated plus-size or bariatric sizing range beyond XXL.

Size availability and measurements vary by product, so check the individual size chart before choosing a garment.

If your measurements fall outside the listed range, that particular style is unlikely to be the right fit.

Clothing After Bariatric Surgery

Clothing needs can change temporarily after bariatric surgery.

Joe & Bella does not make specialized post-bariatric-surgery garments, postoperative compression wear or medical recovery garments specifically for bariatric procedures.

However, an easier closure or alternative pant opening may be useful if your usual dressing routine is temporarily more difficult.

Follow your surgical team's instructions about clothing around incisions, dressings and other postoperative needs.

Someone whose measurements fit within our available sizes may benefit from Joe & Bella clothing if they also want an easier way to fasten, open or put on a garment.

For pants, take your waist and hip measurements while standing and again while seated, especially if you spend a large portion of the day sitting. Your body can distribute differently in a seated position, which may affect how comfortable the waistband and pelvis feel.

Adaptive clothing for bedridden bariatric individuals includes open-back gowns and shirts, which make dressing much easier without needing to move the individual excessively.

These open-back shirts and gowns often have snap or Velcro closures, allowing caregivers to dress the person quickly and with minimal discomfort. 

Soft fabrics, such as cotton blends, are gentle on the skin and help reduce irritation. 

Pants or undergarments with side openings or elastic waistbands can also be useful, as they provide easy access to medical care while maintaining comfort and dignity.

How do I care for bariatric clothing to ensure it lasts?

To care for bariatric clothing, always use a gentle detergent when washing to protect the fabric and prevent irritation to sensitive skin. 

Follow the washing instructions on the label carefully, such as using cold or warm water, to avoid shrinking or damaging the material.
