What to Look for in Nephrostomy Bag Pants
Easy Leg Access
Side openings can make it easier to reach a drainage bag without removing the entire garment.
The amount of access you need depends on where the bag sits. A full-length opening may be more useful for a bag positioned farther down the leg, while a shorter opening may be enough for upper-leg access.
Room for Tubing and Bag Placement
Joe & Bella's adaptive pants are designed with extra room through the pelvis to discreetly accommodate incontinence products, even when full.
That additional space can also provide useful room for nephrostomy tubing or a drainage bag, depending on where the bag is positioned.

This can be particularly useful when a nephrostomy drainage bag is worn farther down the leg because you can reach the bag without removing the entire pair of pants.
The full-length opening also makes the pants easier to put on and take off when conventional lower-body dressing is difficult.
CareZips® Adaptive Pants
CareZips® use a different three-zipper design:
- Two outer-seam zippers from the waist to the knee
- One inseam zipper running knee-to-knee through the crotch
This creates substantial access through the upper legs and changes how the pants open during independent or assisted dressing.
CareZips® may be especially useful when a drainage bag is positioned on the upper leg or when easier access during assisted dressing is also important.
Because the outer zippers stop at the knee, CareZips® do not provide the same full-length leg access as our Side-Zip Pants.
Which Pants Are Best for a Nephrostomy Bag?
It depends primarily on where your drainage bag is positioned.
If the bag is worn lower on the leg:

If the bag is positioned higher on the thigh:
Either Side-Zip Pants or CareZips® may provide useful access, depending on the exact location.
If you also need help getting dressed:

A nephrostomy tube enters the body through the back. Joe & Bella's adaptive pants are not designed to provide direct access to that insertion site.
Their potential benefit is easier access to the leg and drainage bag, additional room through the pelvis, and an alternative way to put on and remove the pants.
If you need access to the nephrostomy site itself for dressing changes or other care, follow the instructions from your healthcare team.

Nephrostomy and ostomy clothing can involve some similar dressing considerations, but they address different setups.
A nephrostomy tube connects the kidney to an external drainage system, while an ostomy pouch is positioned at a stoma on the abdomen.
