Disability Pride Month can be traced back to the disability rights movement, which emerged in the 1960s and 1970s as disabled individuals fought for equal rights and societal recognition. It draws inspiration from the principles of self-advocacy, empowerment, and inclusivity. Growing out of the Civil Rights Movement and protests of the 60s, activists in Colorado protested the lack of accessible transportation in 1978 by blocking city buses with their wheelchairs. The Americans with Disabilities Act was eventually passed in 1990 that requires, among other things, for increased accessibility for wheelchair users.

Meaning and Purpose:

Disability Pride Month holds immense significance as it provides a platform for celebrating differently-abled culture, achievements, and the ongoing fight for equality. It serves as a time to challenge ableism and promote a more inclusive society that values and respects the rights and contributions of individuals with disabilities.
